Frequently Asked Questions

Capoeira is a unique combination of martial art, dance, and sport. While it has elements of self-defense and acrobatics, it is also a highly expressive and collaborative art form that emphasizes rhythm, music, and community.

Music is an essential component of Capoeira, as it sets the tempo and rhythm for the movements and helps create the atmosphere during a roda. Traditional instruments like the berimbau, pandeiro, and atabaque are used to play a variety of Capoeira rhythms, and participants often sing in Portuguese during the performance.

Capoeira is more about community building and personal expression than competition. While there are elements of challenge and play between participants, the focus is on creating a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy and learn from the experience.

No prior experience in Capoeira, martial arts, or dance is required to participate in the workshop. It is designed to be accessible to all skill levels and can be tailored to accommodate beginners and experienced participants alike.

Capoeira has always been a strong community generator, and anyone can participate in its many different aspects. Whether you want to sing, clap your hands, dance, play, or simply watch and enjoy, there is a place for you. Capoeira brings people with different interests and skills together to create a celebration of the body, music, and freedom through Brazilian culture. As they say, “Capoeira is for men, children, and women!” (Capoeira é para homem, menino e mulher!)

Capoeira can be understood in many different ways. Most practitioners recognize two main styles: Angola and Regional.

During our workshop, we will view Capoeira as a wider cultural spectrum and provide a brief explanation of the differences between these two main styles. Remember, Capoeira é uma só!

Capoeira places great importance on mentorship. I have been mentored in Capoeira by my talented Mexican teachers: Mestres Rosita and Cigano. Their most important lesson was to understand Capoeira as an art form and recognize our potential to become professionals in it.

Later, I was mentored by the legendaries Mestre Acordeon & Mestra Suelly, who taught me that Capoeira is life itself while working with them on the project B2B Joga Capoeira.

Since then, while living in Brazil, I have had the honor of learning from respected Mestres from all over the country, such as Itapuã Beiramar, Ferradura, Mago, Lobão, Olavo da Bahia, Calango, Nenê, among many others.

Iê, Vivam todos os Mestres! (meaning “Hail to all the Mestres!”)
